Used Toyota Tacoma:
what to buy and what to skip

The Tacoma barely depreciates, which is either the reason to buy one or the reason you can't afford one. A ten-year-old Tacoma with 150,000 miles routinely sells for what a five-year-old domestic midsize truck costs. That resale is earned — the 4.0 V6 in particular is close to indestructible — but it means you're paying full price for reliability, and you still need to check the frame.

Best years to buy

Generations where the known problems were already fixed and the price hasn't caught up yet.

2012–2015

The refreshed second generation with the 4.0-litre V6. The most durable Tacoma powertrain, and old enough that prices are almost sensible.

2020–2023

Third-generation trucks after Toyota improved the transmission calibration. Modern safety kit and a much better interior.

2016–2019 (with eyes open)

Good trucks, but the six-speed automatic hunts between gears in a way that annoys some owners permanently. Drive one before committing.

Years to avoid

Not "these are bad cars" — these are specific years with a specific, documented failure that costs real money.

1995–2004

Frame rot serious enough that Toyota ran a buyback and frame-replacement program. In salt states, assume the worst until you've been underneath.

2005–2010

A second frame corrosion campaign covers these. Many were replaced; many weren't.

2016–2017

First years of the third generation, with the most transmission-behaviour complaints.

01 Frame rust (1995–2010)

The defining Tacoma issue. Toyota's programs have expired. A rotted frame is not economically repairable — it's the end of the truck.

02 Rear leaf spring cracking (2005–2010)

Subject to a recall. Also causes the well-known 'Tacoma lean' where the truck sits lower on one side.

03 Transmission gear hunting (2016–2019 3.5L)

The six-speed shifts constantly at part throttle to keep the engine in its efficiency band. Not a defect exactly, but a genuine daily annoyance.

04 Lower ball joint wear (2005–2015)

Wear here can cause a wheel to separate. Inspect and replace on schedule — it's a safety item, not a comfort one.

What to check before you buy

Model-specific. Bring this list to the test drive.

Get under the truck with a flashlight and tap the frame rails with a small hammer near the rear spring hangers. Flaking scale or a soft sound means rot.
Ask whether the frame was replaced under Toyota's program, and get the paperwork if so — a replaced frame is a selling point, not a red flag.
Stand behind the truck on level ground and check whether it sits level side to side.
Grab the top and bottom of each front wheel and rock it to feel for ball joint play.
On 2016–2019 trucks, drive at 35–45 mph on rolling terrain and see whether the constant shifting bothers you.

Why are used Tacomas so expensive?

Because they last. Demand from buyers who plan to keep a truck fifteen years keeps used prices close to new, and Toyota has never built enough of them.

What years of Tacoma have frame rust problems?

1995–2004 and 2005–2010. Toyota ran buyback and frame-replacement programs for both, but that coverage has expired and unrepaired trucks are still on the market.

Is the 4.0 V6 or the 3.5 V6 better?
